It is now much easier to ski downhill and not have to worry about missing a cat track that would save you a hike. Previous to these lifts, it was harder for new skiers to avoid needing to hike out of certain terrain skier's right of the Alberta lift, so keep this in mind if reading reviews of the mountain more than a few years old. Both lifts eliminate what were longer flat cat tracks- Charity Jane eliminates Lagerfest's uphill section and Elma eliminates the need to use Park Avenue as a long flat cat track to return to the main base area. With the addition of the Elma and Charity Jane lifts in the last decade, the Alberta area is much easier to navigate. Part of skiing the mountain effectively is recognizing how to string together the steeps. In most of the mountain you have short hits of technical terrain and then mellow benches before you hit the next band of steeps. There is a ton of technical terrain here- cliffs, chutes, gullies, couloirs and cornices. The Alberta area is 1000 acres with only a handful of cleared runs. Trees are amazingly good here, all over the mountain you have well-spaced trees. Outside of Christmas and Texas Spring Break this mountain is has no lift lines and if you already have a pass or lift ticket you can easily park where you can walk 50 feet to a run and ski down to a lift. The Springs Resort and Spa: There is nothing quite like soaking in a natural hot spring after a day on the mountain. These condos are located uptown near the grocery stores and closer to popular trails for Nordic skiing and OHVs. The Nightingale: Pagosa Springs has one of the cutest mountain downtowns in the country, and The Nightingale’s location is perfect for exploring the local shops and restaurants. We highly recommend staying in Pagosa Springs because it has great restaurants and numerous fun winter activities. There are also a few options in the small town of South Fork 25 minutes east of the ski area. Most people choose to stay in Pagosa Springs 30 minutes west of the ski area. Midlayer (optional): depending on how cold it is you may want an insulated jacket or hoodie between your baselayer and outer layer. Avoid cotton as your base layer because once you sweat it doesn’t dry and that will leave you colder. There are 5 levels of ski rentals available at Wolf Creek: The staff is great at getting you fitted if this is your first time and answering any questions. Snowboard rentals include the board, bindings, and boots. Ski rentals include skis with bindings, boots, and poles. The ski rentals are located in the Sport Center next to the ticket counter and the snowboard rentals are located in the Boarder Dome (uphill from the ski rentals). Compared to these resorts, Wolf Creek’s lift tickets are very inexpensive. Most popular resorts are charging $150+ with some over $200 for a one day pass.
